      Cubix

      18 Feb 2002

Motherfucker! Many designers lost their social life to build this website. It’s the companion site to WB’s TV series, Cubix, made by those lunatics at kioken (which is, I believe, where Joshua Davis works).

      Long Space Voyages

      17 Feb 2002

This is funny. Apparently, somone actually calculated how many people you need for a multigenerational space trip :

“For a space trip of 200 years, perhaps eight to 10 generations, his calculations suggest a minimum number of 160 people are needed to maintain a stable population. This would produce around 10 potential marriage partners per person, he says, and if this seems a small number, “think about how many people you dated before you got married”.

They talk about some other stuff, including my favorite genetic subject, inbreeding. [link spotted at Arstechnica]

You can tell that this site and this site are made by the same guy. They both sport the same penchant for brightly-colored collages and weird, deviant content. Kinda like highfiber actually, on a shitload of drugs.

      CamGirl-slash-Designer

      7 Feb 2002

Are you fucking with me?This articlegot me all riled up recently; it’s about how camgirls are upgrading their web design skills and might soon be *the competition*, instead of just *the amusement*.

      “You hate camgirls.

Because they are glorified whores. Because they receive gifts from strangers [...] it’s because they’re stupid. That must be why you have such a hate on for them. So how come their sites look better than yours?”

Now I happen to be extremely insulted by that comment. I am no fucking Mike Young, but I am pretty secure in the idea that any UI, layout or motherfucking JScript that I pull out of my ass is better than anything any camgirl could come up with.

A couple of months ago, when hifi was in its infancy (well, relatively), the staff wrote a whole bunch of camgirl articles, from interviews to features to opinions. The prevailing opinion was that camgirls are fluffy, relatively stupid people. I’ll add a bit to that by saying, “and their web design skills are average to low.”

I mean, come on. Even the article’s author couldn’t come up with very good examples of “well-designed” cam sites, naming this, this and this as spare, intricate and elegant, respectively. I don’t know what mail-in design courses you claim to have completed, boyo, but your taste is fucking impoverished.

I’m not going to hypothesize as to why camgirls sites, in general, suck(although it may be due to the fact that they are amateurs), but I do think that people generally have a lower set of standards for them. I mean, when you say “Design Site”, you know that it has to look better than average. In fact, if it doesn’t look absolutely gorgeous, we say, “That’s an ugly design site.” But when we talk about camsites, we expect utter crap, and (sometimes) see colored crap with CSS instead.

It’s kinda like how when you see a retarded kid drawing a stick figure and you clap your hands and say, “Wow, what a cool drawing! You’re really good at this! You drew the eyes and everything!”

… actually, it’s exactly like that.

“Wow, what a cool camsite you’ve got there! You’re really good at this! Whoa, you used an iframe there for your cam instead of just putting it in a table! You even used CSS here to change the color of your scrollbar so that it matches the color of your headers! And OMFG, you even have a Macromedia-Flash-Version-5 Intro (complete with a SKIP INTRO button)!

YOU COULD BE A MOTHERFUCKING PROFESSIONAL!!!”
