      Rage Against the Machine Reunited

      7 Jun 2007

      Rage Against the Machine reunited

Audioslave bugs me. They had two decent singles on their debut album but the second one sounded way too much like they were just going through the motions. Morello goes out and channels Johnny-Cash as the Nightwatchman, and Cornell decides to Carry On without the rest of the band and I’m thinking Christ Almighty what the hell are these guys doing?
Meanwhile, de la Rocha had been stuffing around for the past two years post-Rage with lots of recordings but no actual releases. Then, in late April, it happened: Rage Against the Machine headlined the final day of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and rumors of a permanent reunion began to stir.

And suddenly, there it was: ratm82407.com. Looking for all the world like a forum discussing Lost, the innocuous domain had little more than a countdown and the opening riff of “Bulls on Parade” on repeat. Exactly what happens 77 days from now is anyone’s guess, although the guys over at Vietnow.org already have a couple of theories.

Honestly, I can’t wait. Rage’s brand of righteous (some would say “self-”) wrath has never quite been replicated by any other group, and the fact that they’ve got a genius like Morello on guitar makes them easily one of my all-time favorite rock groups. (I’ve personally got my fingers crossed that the clock counts down to a live album release of the Coachella performance. That would be sweet.)

I actually liked Audioslave, even if throughout three albums it didn’t seem like they’d evolved much. I was alittle bummed that they broke up, but if it means RATM gets back together then it’s well worth it.

Plus Cornell’s second solo album really blows.

if this spells the possibility of another concert here in the Philippines, then I’m all for it. I thought they were a great band until I saw them live back in ‘97, and then I thought they were phenomenal.

I can’t believe that the author of this piece actually had the audacity to say that the first Audioslave album “had two decent singles on it.” Why write an article about Morello/RATM if you don’t even possess the debut Audioslave album or even a rudimentary understanding of the work of Morello? That record wasn’t some kind of lowly sidenote. The debut Audioslave disc was just as musically significant as the first RATM disc, or Soundgarden’s Superunknown. The debut Audioslave album was a masterpiece and a triumph, front to back. The only thing that was slightly askew was the production. Anyone who had heard the original tracks leaked to the interent knows that Rick Rubin screwed up bigtime with the production. But, the material itself was the BEST you could have possibly hoped for out of this union. A ’supergroup’ album in league with Cornell/Pearl Jam’s Temple of the Dog. Even Morello himself stated that there was more chemistry with Cornell than there ever was with De La Rocha. And, that they produced more material in eight months with Chris, than they did in eight years with Zakk. The first Audioslave album is a masterpiece and it’s ridiculous to speak about it like some sidenote. The third Audioslave album was also something something special. Far better than the 2nd and 3rd RATM discs. That’s for sure. Audioslave went in a completely different direction on Revelations and proved that they could be a distinct entity, completely seperate from the RATM/Soundgarden merger that gave it birth. The writing on that disc is masterful and the production was executed by Brendan O’Brein. The guy responsible for the sound of the ‘Superunknown’ recording. Every Morello fan needs both the first and third Audioslave album. Dang, while you’re at it, might as well get the second one as well.
