Cinematical has a great list of upcoming summer movies (in the US, that’s May to August); there’s a lot of interesting stuff to be excited about this year, so I’ve taken the liberty of republishing the dates of the ones I absolutely will pay to see.
Spider-man 3, May 4
This one doesn’t need to be explained. I have a 14gb archive of every Spider-man comic printed between 1963 and 2004, obviously I’m going to see this movie.
28 Weeks Later, May 11
I absolutely loved Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (as a revisionist zombie movie, it was definitely one of the best of its class), and this sequel, featuring a post-apocalypse Britain should at the very least be interesting. (I know that sequels very rarely live up to the originals, but summer movies are almost always sequels, what can I say.)
Bug, May 25
William Friedkin’s first horror movie since 1990’s The Guardian looks to be an interesting romp through hick-town USA. (It is however impossible for me to listen to someone saying “you’ve got bugs under your skin” without thinking Philip K. Dick, but that’s another issue entirely.)
Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End, May 25
I have to see this if only to justify the 2.5 hours I wasted watching the last one.
Ocean’s 13, June 8
Hey Al Pacino’s in this one. Nuff said.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, June 15
The first movie sucked, but whatever. I’m not really a Silver Surfer fan, but Galactus should be exceedingly fun to see.
Ratatouille, June 29
Brad Bird is a storytelling god. As such, Ratatouille is one of only two animated movies on my must-see summer list (possibly of the entire 2007).
Transformers, July 4
Every heterosexual male in the world is going to be in theaters on 4th of July weekend to see this. I’m pretty sure it’ll suck, but ultimately, who cares?
1408, July 13
John Cusack in a Stephen King movie. Given that I have yet to see a King movie that I really liked — apart from Misery — I really do need to reassess whether this is worth seeing.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, July 13
Everybody else is gonna see this, so why can’t I.
The Simpsons Movie, July 27
Yey!
The Bourne Ultimatum, August 3
Supremacy was a pretty good action flick, and director Paul Greengrass has happily returned for the final installment of the Jason Bourne trilogy.
Stardust, August 10
The Neil Gaiman/Charles Vess novel on the big screen. How could you possibly go wrong, right? Oh wait, there was that whole Mirrormask travesty last year …
