A truly excellent post-apocalyptic sci-fi from Alfonso Cuaron ("Y Tu Mama Tambien", Great Expectations) starring a nicely subdued Clive Owen, newcomer Claire-Hope Ashitey, and a patently kooky Michael Caine. Children of Men takes the familiar concept of a dystopic London in the year 2027, where immigrants are rounded up and placed into ghettos and the entire human race is infertile, and turns it completely on its head. This film dances deftly between political intrigue to racial commentary to out-and-out foot chases with gusto. Towards the end of the movie, there’s an absolutely insane steadicam shot that tracks Clive Owen as he picks his way through the rubble of a ghetto uprising while fire fights and explosions are going on all around. The shot goes on forever and the amount of planning that went into such a complicated sequence is truly astounding (watch it on YouTube here). Brilliant, brilliant sci-fi. Probably the best of the year.
